Inquiry learning simply means that students conduct their learning in a similar orscientific research way. In English learning, there are two kinds of inquiry learningtargets: the target of language rules or grammar knowledge, the other is the knowledgebeyond language. Traditional reading teaching mode puts students in the situation wherestudents accept the knowledge in a passive way, which badly affects students’ learninginterest, and which lets students be lack of the chance of exploring independently andthe spirit of innovation. All these can lead to students’ lacking of analytic ability and theability of solving problems. And until now, there has not been an effective instructionalEnglish reading teaching method in education field. In order to adapt to the newsituation of course reform and to explore a more effective instructional English readingteaching method, the author tries to employ a novel learning mode——inquiry learningmode to guide the teaching of English reading.This article aims to explore the effective method of English reading teaching insenior high schools. The author tries to apply inquiry learning model to the classroom ofEnglish reading teaching in senior high schools, and carries out a series of teachingexperiments to prove the effectiveness and feasibility of the inquiry learningmodel.After briefly discussing related theories of inquiry learning at home and abroad,the author makes the research of applying inquiry learning in English reading teachingthrough the methods of questionnaire survey, reading tests and contrast analysisbetween the mid-term and final exam.The subjects of this study are100senior highschool students of Grade One in Gaomi NO.5Senior High School. During theexperiment,50students in the experimental class participate in inquiry learningexperiment while50students of the control class still take part in traditional readingteaching activities.After five months’ experiment, the questionnaire survey shows: students like theEnglish class better that has a inquiry characteristic.The experimental data suggests:after applying inquiry learning mode, the English average scores of the experimentalclass are9.41scores higher than that of the control class and the reading comprehension of those students in experimental class has been improved a lot. Therefore the authordraws the final conclusion: inquiry learning helps students more rapidly improving thestudents’ English reading ability and the whole level of English learning of Englishreading teaching certain result.The author hopes that this study can provide senior high school teachers witheffective English reading teaching methods, and to advocate for more teachers to applyinquiry learning model to English reading teaching practice, and to provide usefulinspiration to the establishment of a new, student-oriented and effective readingteaching mode in senior high schools student.
