English reading course has been greatly emphasized in English teaching. However, despite the fact that both teachers and students have made great efforts, the result is still unsatisfactory. Something is wrong with our reading teaching, for reading is often regarded as a course for teaching pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary only .As a result, teachers concentrate on new words, language points and sentences structures while students try to memorize them mechanically .So some of the students'learning motivation is decreased and they lack the positive inquiry and thinking, let alone the innovation and autonomous aspects in their studies. To make the course reform successful, some problems that exist in present English reading teaching in middle schools must be solved, putting the new teaching model to use is necessary. Inquiry-based teaching is a teaching model that provides students with abundant opportunities to express, query, inquire and to apply their knowledge in solving practical problems by trying out individual, group, collective, activities, regarding independent and initiative studies and cooperate discussions as a essential part of studying. This thesis tries to begin with theory of inquiry learning .The feasibility of applying inquiry teaching mode for reading teaching has been discussed and described theoretically and practically by discussing the basic features of inquiry learning , the roles of students and teachers in inquiry teaching and teaching course. When combining the theories with English reading teaching, we found that students'autonomous innovation could be cultivated in the activities of English reading teaching, and students'learning style could be improved. Inquiry teaching is one of the feasible modes of carrying out course reform, an effective way to implement quality-oriented education, and a necessary method of developing students' creative ability.
