With the popularization of Higher Education in China, the education quality has been got more concerned. Because of credit system, employment pressure and college students’development needs, conventional model of faculty advisor of class in university is facing new challenges. This article focuses on several problems, such as college students’ expectations, responsibilities, abilities, and the construction and application of competency model of faculty advisor of class in university.This study is an empirical research with a case study of C college in S university. This subject introduced competency theory into the study of faculty advisor of class in university and used mixed research method of quantitative research and qualitative research. On the one hand, the study conducts a questionnaire survey on the status quo and students’ expectation of faculty advisor. On the other hand, interviewing5faculty advisors was conducted in order to analyze the work effect on development of faculty. Finally, a competency model of faculty advisor of class in university is constructed.The conclusions of this study are as follows:The required abilities of faculty advisor of class in university include four dimensions. Firstly, professional knowledge and the knowledge of social psychology are necessary. Secondly, skill dimension refers to organizational, management and communication skills. Thirdly, the attitude of be responsible and be in enthusiasm make the sense. Last, the characters are very important, such as values, ideas, unique life and study experience of faculty advisor of class in university.The competency model is built from four dimensions of knowledge, skills, attitude, and character. Firstly, characters belong to the core content, which are deep-rooted characteristics of individual potential and difficult to be developed. Secondly, knowledge and skills are basic, which can be observed through the external behavior and easily to be developed. Thirdly, attitude is also important. Four dimensions have mutual constraints and interaction. In a word, knowledge and skills are the basis, and attitude is essential for excellent performance, while characters are core elements for the work of faculty advisor of class in university.The innovation lies in the study of:The article combines competency theory with the study of faculty advisor of class in university and constructs the competency model by using mixed research method of quantitative research and qualitative research. The study constructs depth interviews with5faculty advisors of class in university. New findings are follows. Faculty can develop themselves as a faulty advisor of class in university. When they engaged in the work, faculty advisors can obtain information in the feedback from students and improve their teaching methods. Furthermore, faculty advisor may also raise the level of scientific and academic research.
