Vocabulary is the fundamental part of a language. The curriculumstandard of English for secondary schools newly issued by ShanghaiEducation Department has greatly raised the standard of vocabulary.The enlargement of one’s vocabulary lies in the efficiency of theteaching approach to it.Many scholars and researchers have been aware of the problemand have made a lot of achievements in putting forward newalternative approaches. For example, the achievements of Englishvocabulary teaching at secondary schools have been made in fiveaspects including linguistics, pragmatics, psychology, corpus and thenew curriculum. Through horizontal and vertical comparison of relevantresearch results at home and abroad, it can be found that theoreticalstudies are more than operational studies in the researches ofvocabulary teaching methods and strategies. Especially in the recentdecades, the studies of the combination of aesthetics and Englishvocabulary teaching are few, and the studies of vocabulary teachingmethods in the aspect of the musicality of English are fewer.Thus, this thesis is about the marriage of the musicality of languageand vocabulary teaching in English, trying to create a new way to learnvocabulary. The main research methodology is as follows: through thestudy of the musicality of English, we rearrange the vocabulary of thesecondary school English texts by using the relevant theories of Englishmusicality. Through the implementation, it is supposed, monotonousrecitation of words turns into joyous play of words; boredom changesinto interest. By singing the flowing letters, the students step onto theirway to a merry world of English.In the first section of this thesis, a literature review is conducted toget an overview on English vocabulary teaching at secondary schools. The domestic researches of the history and current situations areanalyzed and the features of the related researches are introduced.Some concepts related to vocabulary teaching at secondary schoolsare classified to explain the various categories of related researches.Then an introduction is given to the history and current situation ofEnglish lexicology and English vocabulary teaching in western history.Finally, the section ends with the comprehensive elaboration ofdomestic and international researches.In the next section, with reference to the works of English musicality,the musicality of man and the harmony between man and music, thebasic concepts are comprehensively discussed to lay a theoreticalfoundation for the present study. Meanwhile, some instance analysesare conducted to confirm that English musicality lies in different styles,especially in poetry, prose, proverbs, advertisements and songs.After that, our focus is directed to the discussion of the applicationof English musicality to English vocabulary teaching at secondaryschools. We first discuss the hypothesis of applying English musicality tosecondary school English vocabulary teaching. Then we illustrate theapplication of English musicality at secondary schools with someinstructional designs. Finally, some implications are worked out forEnglish vocabulary teaching at secondary schools.Hopefully, the exploration in this thesis can provide a new point ofview for English vocabulary teaching at secondary schools and analternative approach to the vocabulary teaching, thus shedding somelight on the improvement of English vocabulary teaching situation atsecondary schools.
