With practicality in nature, music education is not only to impact knowledge, but also a process integrating skill training, connotation performance, aesthetic perception and quality cultivation all together. This kind of professional integration can be only realized in the practice of art. Therefore, it is also called "practical education". Professional music education has its own particularity varying from regular higher education. It needs one-to-one teaching as well as proper practice to improve the capacity of performance and creativity. All in all, as a major part of professional music education, practice is dispensable during the higher learning process. This thesis tries to use Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the oldest music institute in China, as research model to elaborate the concept and history of art practice. It also analyzes the relationship of classroom teaching and practice as well as existing problems by delving into the administrative mode and status of the institute. Suggestions are also put forward on more scientific and systematic administration. The author hopes that better administration of practice would contribute to the improvement of teaching quality, virtuous cycle of "teaching-practice-teaching", and the cultivation of more and more music talent with high-grade, precision and advanced quality.
