The pursuit of sustainable development has become the consensus in the international community nowadays. In the development of education, the thoughts of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are spring up increasingly. However, to study the development of higher education in Yunnan Province from the perspective of Education for Sustainable Development, it can be found out that there needs urgent improvement in the structures of higher education in Yunnan, in which the most prominent one is unreasonable discipline structure of higher education.Basing on survey of the discipline structure of higher education in Yunnan, the study includes five parts as the following:Firstly, it has conducted literature method to completely summarize those studies on the structure of higher education in Yunnan in recent years. Secondly, the study has introduced the history and status of higher education in Yunnan on the basis of main events and indicators. The third is the major part, namely, the discipline structure of higher education. The study has demonstrated an overall analysis on the discipline structure of junior college students, undergraduates and postgraduates respectively. The fourth one is case studies; the thesis has respectively conducted discipline structure analyses on junior college students, undergraduates and postgraduates of three higher institutions. Lastly, basing on a comprehensive analysis on characteristics and problems of these three levels of higher education in Yunnan Province, it proposes strategies for improvement of discipline structure from perspectives of society, higher education and students’sustainable development complying with the current situation of political, economic and cultural. To conclude, different regions have their particular demands in the improvement of higher education structure but also have their special resources and advantages. Therefore, to develop the local by blindly following other regions’models may only lose their own advantages. In this case, it is not only difficult to achieve sustainable development but also drags the local holds back from the development. Thus, the study clings to that, the unique geographical advantage, abundant resources and diverse national culture of Yunnan Province determines that it should be characteristic and have a local nature in the sustainable development of Yunnan; moreover, the discipline structure of higher education should be pluralistic and sustainable as well.
