With the method of literatures and documents, interviews, experimental method, mathe—matical statistics, logical analysis and so on, this paper focused on "what (definitions), what (classifications), why (principle), how (to use)" of functional training. In this study, we took the movement of functional training theories and methods as the research object, summarized the domestic and foreign sports coaches and experts’definitions of functional training, to explore the formation and development trends of functional training, and analyzed its principles, types, basic characteristics and scientific significances and so on, we collected the function training methods and means on the human body. At the same time, we designed the related functional training methods and means, our aim is to demonstrate the whole development and innovation process of comprehensive and systematic functional training theories and methods in order to accurate our knowledge, and then we can use functional training to guide our athletes training practice. Through this research, the main conclusions are as follow:(1) Functional training is based on the human body structure, using three theories (sports anatomy, sports physiology and sports neurology) to guide the three systems (frontal plane, sagittal plane and horizontal plane) which combined with the special characteristics of sport in three planes, it emphasizes the transfer activities of body’kinetic chain.(2) The scientific significance of functional training has following points:①Enrich the existing training methods.②Promoting athletes’ sports performance.③Low the damage.④Levelop individualized training programs.(3) Functional trainingoriginated from the field of reabilition, the development of functional training is very good in the field of sports,and it combined with areas of life.The application areas of functional training are expanding as the human’knowledge and activities, and the training methods with different sports are refined. (4) Functional training guided by the principles of training of multi—plane, multi—joint and multi—proprioception. It focused on the training of continuity, regularity and undivided training when exercising.(5) Body functional training methods took functional training as a guide, which combined with advanced training methods and means that proposed the core area, shoulder and upper limbs, buttocks and lower limbs’ functional training methods, and we designed sports’functional training.
