Nonverbal behavior refers that the people use body language, gestures or facialexpressions and movements to express their intention, emotion and inner feelings. AsBarbara (An Analysis of Nonverbal Activity,1971) suggested that the effects ofclassroom teaching only18%of the information is sent through words, with remaining82%sent nonverbal expressions. This study focuses on two questions. Firstly, whetherpupils will pay attention to their English teachers’ nonverbal behaviors in class? Andwhat are the effects of the behaviors on the teacher and students’ relationship, students’classroom participation and classroom atmosphere in primary English teaching?Secondly, to observe and record the frequency and types of teacher’s nonverbalbehavior, then provide the result to the teacher, whether the feedback is helpful to theteachers as they reflect on and improve their teaching? The author carries out theresearch by taking2primary English teachers and126students of Grade five as thesubjects. Data and information are collected via questionnaires, observations. Somemajor findings of this study are presented:1. Teacher’s positive nonverbal behaviors caninfluence the relationship between teachers and students, students’ classroomparticipation and classroom atmosphere in English class.2. Observing and recording theteachers’ nonverbal behavior, then provide the result to the teacher, which will helpteachers express their teaching method and improve their quality of the teaching effect.In light of these findings, the author hopes that this study can give primary Englishteacher a little enlightenment to improve their classroom teaching and professionaldevelopment. |
