English subject is a very important subject for senior middle school students as it is decisivefor students’ being or not admitted into colleges and universities. However, many senior middleschool students are tired of learning English. They are weak in the knowledge of grammar,vocabulary, reading and writing. Under such circumstance, they have no motivation on Englishlearning and spend rare time on English, many of them even quit English study and they arelagged behind the other students in English. The thesis focuses on the education of those studentswho are lagged behind in the class. The theory for the research is format-training, as other skills,English is a tool for communication, so students can be trained to be good at English.The theories supporting the thesis are format-training, which focuses on the development oforgans, the organs like ears, mouth, eyes can be trained to be better. The theory points out thatthe organs are interrelated. One organ’s improvement will better the function of other organs.The input hypothesis theory is important in second language acquisition, while in the lag-behindstudents, the input hypothesis give out those rules as how difficult the knowledge should bemeasured for the students, how much knowledge should be taught to the lag-behind students at atime, how efficiently can the students master the knowledge. Those rules provide the standardand requirements while teaching the students. The foreign language teaching approaches alsofunction well in teaching those lag-behind students. They give out the procedures of how theclasses should be organized, how the class should be asked to do the task of listening andreading.The aim of the thesis is to prove that the format-training method on the whole is functionalfor the English lag-behind senior middle school students. It also wants to check out theexperiment that under the training program the students have improve their English unevenly andfrom the analysis we can find out better ways in English teaching in our later education.The methods of research in the thesis have quantity and quality methods, paper searchingmethod and experiment method. Quantity method contains those statistics like the grade of eachstudents in each paper test, those percentages of analysis of the students’ questionnaire, thefigures of how many the students are asked to do the experiment, how many hours should thetrained students spend on training. Quality method points to those research as how much thestudents are interested in the English learning, how diligent the lag-behind students are onEnglish learning. The method emphasizes the non-intelligent elements. The result of the qualityresearch can better give the information of how the students should be picked out to be trainedon the program, what standard is good while choosing the students. One good point of the thesis is that the thesis starts from the prospective of format-trainingwhich has been deserted for a long time. The experiment carried out is to prove that theprospective is new and efficient. The experiment also proves that lag-behind students are goingto be front students in English if they get the training with willingness.
