Learning motivation is regarded as one of the most important dynamic factors for foreignlanguage learners,as it can help cultivate the learners’ interests,set ambitious goals,overcome learning barriers and strengthen self-confidence and sense of achievements. TheNew Curriculum Standards attach great importance of English learning motivation to thestudents’ affection goal. English learning motivation can stimulate students’ learningenthusiasm,making them participate actively in the classroom activities. Nevertheless moststudents lack enthusiasm in learning English, and some students even hate it in the rural juniormiddle school where the writer teaches English. Therefore, it is very necessary that we shouldstimulate and cultivate students’ motivation for English learning.Lots of research literatures and articles surveyed, the writer of this thesis firstlysummarizes the present status of foreign language learning motivation studies both at homeand abroad. And it then provides an overview of learning motivation, including its concept,category and theory. On the basis of the related theories and researches,the writer designs aseries of questionnaires in line with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation subsystems, which goesthrough statistics and analysis by means of Excel for the mean and standard deviation. Thenbased on of the data collected, together with the feedback from the interviews with theteachers and students concerned, the writer explores the main factors affecting the rural juniormiddle school students’ English learning motivation and the related diversities in terms ofgender and grade, and eventually, some measures and suggestions are put forward with thehope that they can benefit English teachers of rural junior middle schools and researchers.This study results indicate that the present rural junior middle school students’ Englishlearning motivations emerge in order of important influence of others, practical value,attribution, interest, tasks motivation, sense of achievement, rewards and punishment. Thisresearch enables us to believe that English teachers of rural junior middle schools can makegood use of harmonious relationship between teachers and students, of the friendship betweenclassmates, and cultivating students’ interest in learning to stimulate and develop the students’English learning motivation.
