Family education in China has a long history. For thousands of years, many people with lofty ideals undertook indefatigable exploration into the development of family education and accumulated a lot of experience of family education. With the development of the times and social change, the family and education of the Republic of China changed dramatically with the social transformation. Therefore, the family education thoughts have also seen the process of innovation. On the basis of selective inheritance from Chinese traditional education thoughts and absorption of the western modern educational theories, Chinese intellectuals’thoughts of family education took on a new appearance. The strong national consciousness and progressive concept of democracy and science which were all reflected in the family education exerted far-reaching influence on the subsequent family education.With continuous improvement of Chinese school education system, the special function of family education gradually fades from the memory of people. Facing the current situation and problems of today’s family education, it is necessary for us to learn the essence from the family education history for reference. In terms of the research of modern family education, the focus is elites’education thoughts. However, Chinese ordinary intellectuals’family education thoughts are unpopular. In fact, for the current Chinese family whose educators are mainly ordinary intellectuals, these thoughts can provide much beneficial enlightenment.This thesis has first analyzed the background of the emergence of modern family education, including experience of ancient family education, the situation of domestic trouble and foreign invasion in modern China and western learning spread to the East. The main part of this paper focuses on analysis of Chinese ordinary intellectuals’family education thoughts during the Republic of China in aspects of the importance of family education, its aim, task, principles and methods. The third part researches the impact of Chinese family education thoughts of the Republic of China and the enlightenment for today’s family education. At last, it briefly evaluates Chinese family education thoughts at the macro level.
