| During the senior English period, to improve students’ English reading ability is one of the important aims of English teaching. But in my own teaching practice, I find poor reading performance among the students is a prominent problem which is waiting to be solved. However, the way that we use to improve the students’ reading ability based on the traditional textbooks can’t meet the students’ requirement and achieve the goal put forward by the New Senior English Curriculum Standard. It is necessary to search for more teaching resources that can assist English teaching of reading. English newspaper, for example,21st century teens is the first choice of English reading supplements because of its timeliness, practicability, extensive and interest. Using English newspaper to assist English teaching can bring in new blood for the English teaching, which can mobilize the students’ initiative of reading English articles, improving their English reading ability. Therefore, using English newspaper to assist English teaching can better meet the requirement of students’ reading ability.Based on some reading theories and reading strategies, this research proves that introducing English newspaper into the teaching practice of the reading teaching activities is an efficient way to solve the problem of current English reading teaching. In this process, the research is closed corrected to the current situation of English reading teaching and the superiority. In addition, this research demonstrates feasibility of the assistance of English newspaper in English reading teaching.As far as research methodology is concerned, this research includes test method and questionnaire method through which we can know the students’ reading habits and what they think of the assistance of English newspaper in English reading teaching, from which we can prove the validity of assistance of English newspaper in English reading teaching. Judging from the results of the tests, the purpose of improving the students’ reading ability by introducing the English newspaper into English reading teaching is achieved.This essay not only proves that English newspaper plays an active part in improving the students’ reading ability, but also demonstrates that English newspaper opens a door to the current English reading teaching in the senior middle school. |
