This his study was encouraged by the author’s interest in themanagement of Olympic Games venues after the2008Olympic Games inChina. After reading massive related historical documents and literature, thethree newly built major venues of2008Beijing Olympic Games including theNational Stadium “Bird’s Nestâ€, National Aquatics Centre “Water Cube†andthe National Stadium were chosen as the research sites. Multi-case study, including depth interviews with14facility management staff, was used tosystematically analyze the management and use of China’s Olympic venuesafter the Olympic period. The study assessed the "Chinese style" operation ofOlympic venues after the game, identified the problems in it and teased outthe influencing factors. The study ultimately reached the followingconclusions:(1)government leads the operation of the Olympic venues afterthe game and its emphasis on social effects restricts the development ofmarket activities;(2) given the present sports system, the degree ofdissemination of sports relying on large and expensive venues among themasses is very low, which is not conducive to the Beijing Olympic venuesafter the game to achieve full utilization;(3)low level of major sportsleagues makes sports events of wide appeal seriously lacking, which severelylimits the use of design features of Beijing Olympic venues after the game. The study also reconsidered the effect of Olympic brand in the context ofthe post-Games use of Olympic venues. Limitations of the study are pointedout and future research directions are suggested. |
