Harold Joseph Laski, a famous English professor on political thought, has exerted deep and long-lasting influence on Chinese liberalists, including Luo Longji, Zhang Junmai, and Wang Zaoshi. However, past researchers did little detailed work on displaying the concrete impact. This thesis will make an exploration of the degree Laski affected Luo Longji. Since Luo accepted Laski’s view wholly in some aspect, this article shows directly where Luo copy Laski’s works after reading the essays and books of them. In order to make clear how Luo took in Laski’s view uniquely, we choose Zhang Junmai and Wang Zaoshi as reference object. The thesis includes three parts mainly:Chapterl shows the general activities and political thought of Luo Longji in Xin Yue period. In this period Luo took charge of Xin Yue monthly for a time and launched the human rights debate with Hu Shi in reaction to the dictatorship of Republic of China. Luo was the main force of the debate who persisted till the end. Luo’s major viewpoint in this time are as follows:putting forward systemic viewpoint on human rights and advocating freedom of speech; attaching importance on administration and promoting expert politics and civil service system; opposing dictatorship of one-party, criticizing Political Tutelage, and promoting constitutionalism; the criticism of communism and the point of view on Chinese revolution.Chaper2makes detailed analysis about how Luo succeeded Laski in activity pattern and political thought. The Ping club, Fabian Society in China, was introduced to China by Luo Longji. Luo accepted Laski’s view on rights and communism entirely.Chapter3analyzes how Luo took in Laski’s view collectedly, with Zhang Junmai and Wang Zaoshi as reference objects. Zhang took in Laski’s viewpoint in the book A Grammar of politics on how to coordinate the relationship among the state, society and individual. Wang accepted Fabian socialism after studying with Laski. Luo was deeply affected by Laski on his systematical presentation of human rights. In the conclusion part, the thesis tries to explore why Laski influenced Chinese liberalists to such a degree. Laski’s personal charm and the magnet of his thought is one hand, and the actual need of Chinese society at that time is another.
