Chinese traditional concept of honor and disgrace dates back to Spring and AutumnWarring States period, there were also some exposition relate to this concept amongphilosophers in pre-Qin period. Then through the inheritance and development in Song andMing Dynasties by those idealist philosophers, traditional concept of honor and disgracegradually formed with stable content and characteristics. Ancient concept of honor anddisgrace deeply based on the theory of human nature, and presented an ideal personality trait ofthe theory of“Holy King”,the author think it is on this basis that the traditional concept ofhonor and disgrace, with which “shame-awareness”serve as the psychological basis of moralautonomy,“moral honor”as the value goal,“gentlemen’s personality”as the spiritualdemand, was finally formed. One hand,it occupied a decisive position in ancient people’spersonal accomplishment and ancient society’s development, ancient people’s pursuit of idealpersonality,as well as the formation of ethical character of Chinese was closely related to theacknowledged thought of honor and disgrace;the other hand, there were also some impacts inancient concept of honor and disgrace, which restricts the development of ancient society at thesametime.Under different culture backgrounds, people’s living conditions, social customs and level ofeconomic development are different too,as well as the evaluation principle to things and theidea of honor and diagrace. Such as the concept of honor and disgrace in western culture whichbased on Christian “Original Sin”and the value orientation of “Justice”,the author think it isobviously differ from Chinese culture,Chinese traditional concept of honor and disgrace showup the inner trait of “shame sense”trend and the evaluation principle of “benevolence” and“righteousness”. Therefore, on the one hand, from the idea of honor and diagrace in Chineseand western culture can better highlight the inner trait of “shame sense”trend of Chinesetraditional concept of honor and disgrace. On the other hand, from the western social moraljudgment principles and value orientation contrast, explore the difference between the two andthe value consensus. thereby be well prepared for advanced studies. Although traditional concept of honor and disgrace occupied a decisive position in ancientpeople’s personal accomplishment and ancient society’s development, but in modern Chinesesociety, with the development of market economy and the reinforce of pluralistic value trend, people’s values still changed so much, ideas such as pursuing personal interests, emphasizingindividual values, justice and fairness have been around. But because of the impacts of marketeconomy, there have been some phenomenons of “Moral Loss”in society, people generallyface a dilemma of value choice. Traditional concept of honor and disgrace had lost the guidedfunction for people’s rational value orientation, it has to be said that there were some problemsemerged in the process of interadaptation between traditional culture and modern society。Hence, the author think that people should excavate the interlinked part between traditionalculture and modern society, absorb the essence of western culture,in order to solve theproblems and challenges people faced in value appealing, serve as an active role in theestablishment of modern citizen’s value orientation.
