The Middle Ages is the crucial period in the history of international law, and also theexact period of time when the Mongol Empire began its westward conquests. During thistime, the Mongols launched a series of wars to conquer the countries of Western world, bringing bloody massacres and tragic memories to these regions. So, when describing theacts of the Mongols during their conquests, many domestic and foreign scholars are likelyto use these words: barbaric, cruel, ruthless, without any rules and so on.However, after reading a large number of historical materials, I found that, during thecourse of Mongol conquests, there are not only bloody acts, but also some acts whichcomplied with the contents of international law and the law of war, in the wars. Even onearticle of the Genghis Khan’s Code implied the factors of international law, as well as thelaw of war. And some behaviors which might be meaningful for the development ofinternational law, can be found in the Mongol conquests. Thus, I studied the history of international law in Middle Ages, as a juncture, tooperate analysis between the acts in the wars of Mongol conquests and the law of war.Eventually I found a real relationship between the various acts of war in the Mongolconquests and the development of the law of war. |
