Based on the Chaconne for violin composed by Bach, the Italianpianist and composer ferruccio Benvenuto Busoni arranged the originalmusic into piano solo, which was further developed by Lipps, the Russianaccordionist and educationist, with an effort to make an adaption for theBayan solo. This is a new attempt for Chaconne in the field of accordionperformance. However, while the adaption has always been a popularrepertoire in accordion concerts, it is difficult to master the compositionalstyle and performing skills. Therefore, this thesis attempts to explore indetail of the compositional techniques, artistic characteristics andperforming skills both practically and theoretically, with an aim to widenthe unique style and artistic expression of music for accordion. To frame this thesis, Chapter One introduces the background ofChaconne starting with Bach’s life to further investigate its music modality.Chapter Two concentrates on the structure, compositional techniques, mode, tonality and harmonic distinction for each variation. Chapter Three offersan in-depth explanation of the style and skills from the angle of Bayan accordionists. Chapter Four further presents the artistic fascination anddistinction of Bayan in musical expression. In a word, this study aims, theoretically to bring more light to Bayan and Chaconne, in the hope thatthe music form of the baroque period to be better understood; andpractically to provide referential value to proficient performance.
