The study on ancient Chinese vocabulary has a long history.Since the20th century,scholars have learnt the western advanced theories and methods of vocabulary. Therefore, the study on ancient Chinese vocabulary has developed greatly.However, the study on ancient Chinese vocabulary is still on a low lever nowadays compared with the study on the grammer and pronunciation.Professor Lv Shuxiang ever said," The study on ancient Chinese vocabulary is the poorest one among the study on the Chinese language history.’The Chinese vocabulary was made up of single syllable words in the ancient times.And polysyllable words had increased greatly until the middle ancient times.In theModern times,a large number of polysyllable words have took up the Chinese vocabulary.It follows the rule of language development that the single syllable words develop into the polysyllable words.And the research on the phenomenon is of great help to expose the characteristic and rule of the Chinese language development.Professor Xu Weihan ever pointed out,"The change of the single syllable word and the polysyllable word is obvious especially the single syllable word develops into the polysyllable word.It is meaning to do research on the reason and feature of it.’I try to study the polysyllable word of "Shu Ji Zhuan" employing the theories and methods of modern linguistics.There are four chapters in my thesis.The first chapter is the introduction.It is made up of five parts.Part one is the material value of "Shu Ji Zhuan"."Shu Ji Zhuan" was composed by Cai Chen in the South Song Dydasty following the order of Zhu Xi.And it is the precious modern Chinese material.Part two is the sense of the study on "Shu Ji Zhuan",which will benefit the reveal of the situation of modern Chinese.Part three is the research methods on "Shu Ji Zhuan",that is,exploring from the structure and meaning of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".Part four is the reason of the increase of the polysyllable word in the Song Dynasty,which contains both the inner and external factors.The last part is the division of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan",which follows the rules of combinations of structure and meanings.The second chapter is the structure of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".It is divided into four parts.Part one is the research on the structure type.I make use of the structure type division raised by Professor Huang Borong and Liao Xudong.Part two is the research on the structure of the pure single syllable word containing the continuous and vowel pronunciation word.Part three is the research on the compound word,containing the compound,the additional,the overlapping word.The last part is the characteristic of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".The third chapter is the part of speech of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".There are three parts.Part one is the relations between the research on vocabulary and grammer,which is connected closely.Part two is the part of speech of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".There are noun,verb,adjective,adverb and conjunction in it.The last part is the research on the word of double part of speech.The fourth chapter is the semantic feature of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".It is divided into two parts.Part one is the assemble relations of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".Part two is the combination relations of the polysyllable word in "Shu Ji Zhuan".
