Liu Heng who has been hailed as the key player of the "new realism novel " in1980’s.Now critical circles mainly focus on his new realistic writing style, they considered that he probe into the human existence Enlightenment from food, sex, wealth, power and other aspects, and emphasized on the "fatalism" in the novel. This thesis argues that in Liu Heng’s novel, the seemingly cold zero narrative, not only has a distinct contemporary consciousness, but also permeated with a strong consciousness of philosophy. This paper adopts perspective of the existential philosophy which had an extensive impact on intellectual circle and cultural circle since the late1970s, to reconsider Liu Heng and his work. The first part tries to analyzes the possibility of the impact that the existentialiam had effected on Liu Heng according to the general environment of Liu Heng’s time and his personal experience. The secondpart tries to explore existential themes in Liu Heng’s novel-the characters described by Liu Heng are exposured to "hell ",and they suffer from the loneliness, anxiety, nothingness. They sink in the ridiculous world, turn into the cowards in front of difficulties. Liu Heng seted the end of death for the characters, which just coincidents with the Existentialiam viewpoint that death is a choice for the lonely individual to get rid of the tragical life. The third part discusses the Liu Heng’s thought has surpass the Existentialism. Liu Heng takes a useful exploration towards huaman nature which refers to the ultimate meaning of life, as well as ultimate meaning of existence through the literary creation.To sum up, the thesis argues that as the new representative of realistic fiction, Liu Heng insisted his own survival realism, and did not fully agree with the philosophy of existentialism and aesthetics. Liu Heng’s novels continue to break through in the plight of survival, and trying to find the salvation and progress of survival. This fully shows tireless efforts in achieving the persiut of the human spirit made by the author who shouldered up social responsibility.
