In this paper, I study the art of American mezzotint print artist John Sartain who represents a group of artists pursuing art but neglected by the art critics in the20th century. The printmaking flourishing period and the mezzotint technique language taken as the breakthrough point, I elaborates the development of the mezzotint in Britain as well as the artistic achievements of John Sartain’s, hoping that the contribution and value that the artist made should be reconsidered.This paper is divided into three parts. In the first part the introduction of the artist John Sartain’s life and his art creation background are made., as well as more detailed explanation why mezzotint in Britain becomes most popular, and the influence of mezzotint print on the American art of that time.John Sartain’s mezzotint replication portrait prints and his contribution to the American prints are the focus in the second part.The third part combines the analysis of John Sartain with the original printmaking and replication of printmaking. It throws new light on the the important value of replication of printmaking and the doubt of the artist’s standards in art history.
