In The Late Qing Loanwords Development Research

Language contact is universal language phenomenon; a direct result caused by language contact is mutual borrowing of words. Loanword is an important part of a national language vocabulary, and thus one of the important issues in linguistic research.The WanQing period (1840-1911), as a large-scale introducing period of loanwords after Han and Tang dynasties, due to its socio-historical and cultural background, has a typical significance in reflecting the relation between loanwords and socio-culture. Took the WanQing loanwords as abject, inspect their motivation of entering Chinese and the diachronic evolution process afterwards, not only can know the universal regular of the introducing and evolution of Chinese loanwords, but also can provide refrence to the study of modern Chinese loanwords. Under the guidance of "co-variance of language and society", this paper aims to analyze the interactive relationship between the WanQing loanwords and violently changing society. This paper falls into5chapters:Chaper one:the preface. It introduces the situation of the research on Chinese loanwords in brief and accounts for the research contents, instructional theories and study methods of the thesis.Chapter two:the category of WangQing loanwords. At first, we make a list of WanQing loanwords with the help of some dictionary and works in print, and then describe the general appearance and analyze the composing characteristics of WanQing loanwards separately from language source, borrowing pattern, social content, and introducing stage.Chapter three:selection to WanQing loanwords. Loanwords introduced in WanQing period separately experienced various development cours eunder the selection procedure of Chinese vocabulary. From Opium war, Chinese traditional culture confronted with massive attack from Westen sci-tech and culture in modern times, the sharp societal changement accelerate the update of Chinese vocabulary. In this period, the quantity, categories, borrowing pattern of loan words are unprecedented in history. These loan words are experienced different heuristic procedure after entering Chinese vocabulary. In this procedure, loan words of different kinds compete with each other, some loanwords pradually blended into Chinese vocabulary, while others were discarded.Chapter4:the evolution of the WanQing loanwords. This chapter mainly introduces the development process of WanQing loanwords, which consist of phonetic development, development of word form, and lexical development.Chpter5is the conclusion of this paper, which brings out the main results.
