Soil is one of the most ancient human tools and the basic elementof the universe. Grasping and using the soil marks the beginning ofcivilization. As an important image in Western poetry, soil is oftenassociated with love, religion, revolution, war and so on. It contains alarge number of human unconscious psychological experience, andreflects human beings’ recognition to the external world andself-discovery.Although ancient Chinese poems have touched upon the imagesrelated to the soil, but compared with those high-frequency imagessuch like flowers, birds, insects, fish, mountains, soil is apparently in thepotential state. With the commencement of the New CultureMovement, soil image in modern poetry gradually mounted the stageof literature, and became one of the main images. The construction ofsoil image has great connection with the poets mental personality andtheir epoch. It can both reflect a measure of different periods’ Chineseintellectuals’ way of seeing the world, and express the transmutationorbit of intellectuals’ spirit.This paper will start to discuss soil image of the first half of20thcentury poetry in three parts. The first part is to comb the soil image’sPoetry, analysis the historical context when the image construct. Thesecond part is about the poets’ cognizance of both their individual andthe outside world in different period. The third part is to Ai Qing’s poemput emphasis on showing the construction of philosophical thinkingthrough soil image; wildsoils and the soil of smelting in Pu Feng and DaiWang Shu poem express the utilitarian trait and group utilitarian; alsothe soil represented life in Dan’s poem. Soil got much images of thesame structure, they make the soil’s spiritual being lasting, andcomposed the poet’s imaginational world,and to describe the isomorphic image of the soil from perception, temperament, color andfunction part, and analyze both their spiritual implication and theevolution of the poets thought The forth part will focus on theassociativity of fire image and Chinese intellectuals’ psychologicalcomplex.
