After the opening of Shanghai, painting and calligraphy marketflourished gradually, and Jianshan Zhuang became the main way tosale paintings and calligraphy works. At present, the academic’s mainresearch is about painting and calligraphy association, famous paintersand art exhibitions and so on. However, the research of JianshanZhuang is very poor. This article will investigate Shanghai JianshanZhuang,mainly from the following three aspects.Firstly, this article analyzes Jianshan Zhuang’s development path,distribution pattern, scale, and practitioners, we can find that JianshanZhuang’s development was consistent with modern Shanghai’seconomic and cultural development. From the late Qing Dynasty to theRepublic of China, Jianshan Zhuang formed two centers gradually, onewas Yu Garden, and another was Henan Road and Guangdong Road.Each Jianshan Zhuang changed as time went by, meanwhile, JianshanZhuang’s scale had grade gap. As cultural services, its practitionerswere educated, even the managers had painting and calligraphyappreciation ability, which played an important role in its development.Secondly, the article analysised the Jianshan Zhuangs operatingcharacteristics, and explored its relations with other art forms for sale.Jianshan Zhuang were based mainly on calligraphy, painting, paper,fan, but also had different focuses. Duo Yun Xuan and Jiu Hua Tangand so on were good at making jian paper and paintings, Wang Xing Jiand Yu Hong Ji were specialized in making fans and the celebritiescalligraphy and painting fans. The celebrity paintings and works of fanswere fashion. Therefore Jianshan Zhuang propagated by newspaper, inthis way, it could not only raised sales, but also did promoted socialpopularity. Jianshan Zhuang and painting calligraphy society as well asart exhibitions, they competed with each other, meanwhile they also had cooperate relationship. However, the modern painting market inshanghai who played a main role was Jianshan Zhuang. It had industryassociation, but their counterparts had always been a shortage, northe statute of the relatively complete, as well as calligraphy andpainting transactions, in certain extent it affected their owndevelopment.Thirdly, there were interdependent relationship between JianshanZhuang and artist group. Jianshanzhuang made profits by selling artists’works, at the same time, artist group made a living from their workswhich were sell by Jianshan Zhuang. Their interdependent relationshipwas based on the remuneration. The remuneration had been greatlyimproved from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China.Generally speaking, those famous artists’ remuneration was higher thancommon artists, and male artists’ remuneration was valued more thanfemale artists. Jianshan Zhuang’s profits were influenced by thesefactors. Besides, Jianshan Zhuang sometimes offered help for artists,such as propaganda, economic aid, study, place for painting, and soon. In a word Jianshan Zhuang had been played an important role inthe formation of Shanghai painter group and Shanghai Art Society.
