Language is a unique product in the development of human society, whichexistence and development are closely linked with social attitudes and, to a large extent,impacted by social values. Meanwhile, language is a mirror of society, socialdevelopment and changes can be clearly demonstrated in language. For a long time,men are always in the dominate place, while women are the target to be discriminated.Based on the previous research, the author make a contrastive study of the sexismin English and Chinese systematically from the aspect of vocabulary, conduct relatedresearches and analyses on it, so as to help people have a deepen understanding oflanguage discrimination, to help people to improve self-consciousness of avoiding theuse of discriminated words and to promote the harmonious development of languageand society.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part serves as an introduction whichgives a brief literature review on the studies of sexism in Chinese and English, explainsand defines the concept "sexism" and the scope of this thesis. The second part is thestudy of sexism in Chinese vocabulary, which is the core part of this thesis. Theprevious research are mainly based on the analysis of some typical examples,Wardhaugh regards it as "a topic which seems to invite ’large’ arguments based on’small’ date". Such research will inevitably have the problems of overgeneralization.Therefore, in order to avoid this problem, the author has collected all the sex words in"the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary", with a view to demonstrate sexism in Chinesein a comprehensive and clear way. The third part focuses on English sexism, which alsouses the way of infinite data collection. Part four applies the approach of contrast, andgive a relatively systematic analysis of sexism in Chinese and English in various aspectssuch as word form, word meaning. The last part is the conclusion of the whole thesis, inwhich the author discuses the significant and defects of this study.
