Ebian Dialect Phonetic Research

Ebian County is located in the southwestern part of Sichuan Province,which is within the administration of Leshan City.In addition to having some general characteristics of Xinan Mandarin dialects,it also has some unique features.Based upon through field work,this paper offers a comprehensive description of the dialect on phonetic systerm and its character through synchronic portray,horizontal and historical comparison.Besides,it further explores the evolutionary process of the Middle Ages entering tone.This paper consists of six parts.The first chapter is preface,which introduces the geography,administration area.population and the evolution of organizational system of Ebian County,roughly sketches out the situation of researches on the dialect,expounds the significance of the researching the dialect.The second chapter describes the phonetic system of Ebian dialect.On these aspects of consonants,vowels,tones,the matching relationship.The analysis of the principles of the phonetics change is constructed upon the previous division,and the major concern is to illustrate the tone sandhi and retroflexion.The third chapter lists the syllabary of Ebian dialect.The fourth chapter deals with the corresponding relatingship with the phonological system of the Ebian dialect dan Qieyun phonological system.Some sound changes and historical development from Middle Chinese to the modern dialect is discussed well.The fifth chapter analyses those characters which were read in falling tone and entering tone in ancient time are now read in high and level tone.The sixth chapter determines the ownership of Ebian dialect.
