ShuoWenJieZi (hereinafter referred to as the said “words”) is the first dictionarythat analyzes glyph, explains word meaning and identifies vocalizing, and also an"encyclopedia" with rich cultural implication. The9353characters recorded in “words”carry abundant information, they have left us valuable cultural heritage and have highvalue for study. This paper will take “ShuoWenJieZi” as the example to elaborate thestatus of jade department character in the book and to classify it reasonably during theprocess of summarizing “words” and jade department character. Through the culturalinterpretation of ritual jade, auspicious jade and accessory jade, it reveals the historicalevolution process of jade from “jade” period,“jade” period to “jade” period which ismanifested as funeral ritual jade, political, military, diplomatic jade and ornamental jadein the paper. As time goes on, some literati bring "jade" into the literary works, and thismakes it derive out more cultural connotations which are presented as "five-virtuetheory","seven-virtue theory","nine-virtue theory" and "eleven-virtue theory" etc here.
