“The Emperor Jones” and “All God’s Children Got Wings” are two expressionistdramas which caused significant repercussions of Eugene O’Neill’s medium-term dramacreation, and he shaped representative black portraits in these two dramas. I explainthese two drama texts in detail in this thesis, trace to its source; focus on discussing theproblem of the black portraits’ self-identity, and analyse black portraits’ complexpsychological activities in depth; concretely analyse the expressionist drama techniquethat Eugene O’Neill utilized for shaping black portraits with unique artistic charm;compare the black theme dramas of Eugene O’Neill and other contemporary Americanplaywrights to explore the substance of the black portraits shaping in Eugene O’Neill’sdramas, and expound Eugene O’Neill’s concern on problems about the blacks.I proceed from this new perspective of the black portraits, research on EugeneO’Neill’s drama creation thinking in the macroscopic level, and analyse Eugene O’Neill’sdrama expression technique on the micro level, this thesis riches the studies on EugeneO’Neill’s dramas.
