| Eugene O'Neill is the greatest dramatist ever in American theatre.Long Day's Journey into Night, based on his own family, represents the paramount achievement of his dramatic creation. This thesis reviews former studies on this play, and attempts to reinterpret this play from the perspective of modernity. The term "modernity" signifies the time being, and it indicates an innovating culture.Modernity expressed the ambiguity, the despair, the inner anxiety of modern people, which is actually caused by the rapid development of modern civilization. This study endeavors to probe into three modernistic features of Long Day's Journey into Night:his tragic vision, his expressionism, and his characterization of Mary Tyrone. My aim is to reveal the deep-seated meaning of his dramatic creation in the light of modernity, thus help his readers as well as his audience better appreciate the play. |
