"mencius" Preposition Research

Preposition is a significant part of Chinese grammar system. Although it does nothave words meanings, it do play an important role in linking the syntactic component,which expressing the relationship between semantics and syntax. Through theexhaustive, quantitative, static description and analysis of the book of Mencius, thisarticle attempts to show the characteristics of preposition in aspects of semantics, syntaxand pragmatics.Regarding the preposition in Mencius as a sealing system, this article takes a wayof static description, induction, analysis and other methods to study. Firstly, we useprofessional computer software to carry out an exhaustive, quantitative survey, toestablish uniform standards on the preposition system in Mencius, which has in total of22prepositions. According to the semantics expressed by the preposition, whichintroduce the object of the preposition, we divided the preposition into eight majorcategories, and classified the system according to the semantic function. Prepositioncannot make an independent syntactic elements, and it has an inextricably relationshipwith its object, so this paper not only examining the preposition itself, but alsoconducting investigations related to the composition with the preposition. We inspecteach prepositional object composition and then introduce the grammatical function ofthe preposition and its objects structure, respectively, for its adverbial, complement, theAttributive explore.On the basis of the individually description of the preposition system, wesummarized the result of study. By analyzing the amount and its distribution in variousprepositions, we try to show one part of the situation of preposition of the WarringStates Period. With correlative thought, through the systematic study, we analyze itsvarious features and the location, discover the features found on the word order of thatera, and explore the preposition combination of ability and position of the law of the evolution of the linguistic characteristics.
