This paper analyses the English translation and explanation of the vocabulary inChinese Course, which is published by Beijing Language and Culture University Press,and summarizes the problems existing in it. They conclude: the English translation andexplanation is wrong, and cannot reflects the true meaning of the word; the Englishtranslation and explanation is not that accurate, which can only reflect partial meaning ofthe word; the English translation and explanation cannot embody the emotional coloringcorrectly; the part of speech in the English translation and explanation is not correct; theword used in the English translation and explanation has many senses, not equals to themeaning of the Chinese word; the sense of the word in the translation and explanation isnot the sense of the Chinese word in the text; the English translation and explanation doesnot fully explain the cultural connotation; the English translation and explanation hassomething wrong in printing. This paper analyses each English translation andexplanation that is not perfect. Meanwhile, aiming at the problems which existing in theEnglish translation and explanation, this paper analyses cultural differences between theEnglish translation and explanation and the Chinese meaning of the word, includingvocabulary coincidence, vocabulary parallel, vocabulary vacancy, vocabulary conflict etc.At last, this paper gives some advices about the English translation and explanation,including the English translation and explanation may neither list too many meaningsnor be too simple and lack limitations; the English translation and explanation shouldlist the basic meaning of the word; the English translation and explanation should reflectthe cultural connotation of the word; the English translation and explanation cancombine literal translation and free translation; the English translation and explanationcan be added some signs and pictures etc.
