Water is the most important material to human being, who became aware of the importance of water since the ancient times. The old Babylon civilization originated from the two rivers, the ancient Egyptian civilization originated from the Nile Valley, the ancient India civilization originated from the India River and the Ganges River, and the Yangtze River.Water has played an important role during the civilization.Among the murals in these areas, there are a lot related to water, which varies depending on the regions. This paper will discuss about the description, meaning and significance of water in ancient murals. Through analysis we can know, the ancient regional water shape were used in a linear form. The ancient murals have expressed differently, each region has its own characteristic, and even the same region differs by time. The water can be divided into religious related and non-religious related:the former includes Christian,Buddhist and other religious subject such as the worship for the god and saints, while the non-religious subject includes people’s daily life, customs, and festivals. The expression of water in murals can be divided into image space and real space, and the former format has been used more frequently,Most murals have certain meaning for the water, especially in religious murals. However, during the Tang Dynasty of China and the European Medieval and renaissance period, more expression of water has been seen in the real space, while the symbolic water decrease slowly. I put these understanding of the water in the ancient frescoes into my graduation works, through this series of works I want to express a kind of state which between an active and passive relationship, the water in my works symbolizes something upcoming. Maybe some outcomes that no one can imagine, or some outcomes we hope to occur.
