President Grant’s policy toward Native Americans, which was calledPeace Policy, aimed to concentrate Indians in the reservations,Americanize them with lots of assimilation measures, and achievereconciliation of the two nations. Though there was incoherence in itsformulation and implementation, the good intentions of Peace Policy washighly evaluated. And it had played an important role in improvingrelations between the two nations.The thesis primarily mainly talked about the background,implementation process, results and characteristics of Peace Policy,analyzed status and influence of Peace Policy in the history of AmericanIndian Policy and social changes of Gilded Age, and discussed theenlightenments of Peace Policy.There are five parts in this thesis.Part One mainly reviewed American Indian Policy before PresidentGrant, and briefly analyzed their characteristics.Part Two analyzed international and domestic situations and featuresof Indian affairs in the time of President Grant, which showed thenecessity of reform of Indian policy.Part Three discussed the process of the formation of Peace Policy,analyzed the impact on the making of Peace Policy of Americans` twoattitudes toward Indians, paternalism and colonialism, and Grant’spersonal factors.Part Four discussed implementation process of Peace Policy. The majorfour measures of Peace Policy are: establishment of the Board of IndianCommissioners, assignment of church people as Indian agents, abolishmentof treaty system and massive measures to assimilate Indians.Part Five analyzed achievement and shortage of Peace Policy, characters and innovations of Peace Policy and reasons why it didn’treach expected goals fully, and illustrated enlightenments of PeacePolicy. Besides, in this section I try to give a interpretation of PeacePolicy from the perspective of“Big History”,using broader historicalhorizons.
