This paper designed to make a study of the changes in landownership in19th century Britain,and what had happened in France at the same time. I put these two countries into comparison in order to found the trends and the characteristics in the process of modernization of the landownership.The introduction of the article,I made a brief overview of the purpose of the paper as well as the methods of my research.furthermore this reference to the part of the article and literature by reviewing the excellent works made by the historians both domestic and foreign whom in the field of property rights,the pattern of the landownership and also enclosure which related to this article.In the first chapter Ⅰ reviewed the changes in the landownership between late17th century and the18th century in Britain and Frence. Britain or France during this period the modern concept of landownership had not really been established in law,but in real life, part of the land already became private property. By gradual elimination of the customary tenant makes the land property rights further to the private landownership in this period by changing land management,but the development of France in this regard is very difficult.The second chapter is the emphasis of this article,which explains how private landownership established in the19th century Britain and France.In Britian common rights was the last barrier on the way of private property. After the enclosure,the rights on the land became clear, and Britain completed the process of land privatization.In France a series of laws enacted during the Revolution and the Napoleonic period which protected the private property of landowners.But common still existed in some communities of france,so did the common rights.There is a discusstion of the changes in the structure of landownership in the third chapter. Different process leaded to different results between the two countries.Britain in the19th century, is characterized by large areas of land for a very small number of owners, while the number of small land-owners in France is still very great.The last section of the article summarized.
