E.M.Forster (Edward Morgan Forster) was a man who enjoys equal popularity with James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence. He was one of the greatest British novelists in the201’1century. The works of Forster reflected the changing time of intellectuals in the United Kingdom. The theme of his novel about intellectuals was a changing process, from critiquing the intellectuals with an "underdeveloped heart" to those who took strategies through "connection" to find a way out, which reflected the process of Forster studied on intellectuals at different times.This paper is based on three of Forster’s novels-Howard’s End, the Longest Journey and Where Angels Fear to Tread. This paper takes philosophical theories of Karl Jaspers as entry point. And it takes freedom, equality, fraternity, and the interaction between people as the perspective. It analyzes Foster’s thinking and reveals the underlying causes of the strategy about the "connection" trough the criticism of the intellectuals with an "underdeveloped heart", the strategies taken by them through "connection" and the fail of "connection".This paper is composed of five parts including introduction, chapter one, chapter two, chapter three and conclusion. Introduction describes the origin of the creation of E.M. Forster and his thoughts, the concept of intellectuals, and the study of intellectuals in Forster’s novels.Chapter One, entitled intellectuals with an "underdeveloped heart", analyzes the intellectuals, in the initial creation of Forster, which have a fully developed physique, well-developed mind, but a hyperplasia of the heart, Foster tried to give them guidelines for a way out.Chapter Two, entitled the intellectuals who took strategies through "connection", analyzes the intellectuals in the late creation of Forster who tried to solve the situation of social interaction between communication difficulties through the "connection"The title of Chapter Three is the limitations of the Foster’s thoughts about "connection". This chapter is divided into two parts. First, it analyzes the limitations of the Foster’s thoughts. Then, it explores the unreasonable of those thoughts about "connection".The Conclusion summaries Foster’s thinking and the main ideas of this paper. And it points out the important guiding significance of Foster’s ideas to the society and future generations.
