Objective:This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of "Modified Ma Chi Xian Decoction", an empirical formula "invigorating spleen and pacifying spirit" used frequently by the author’s supervisor in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, with Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) Index and dermatology life quality index (DLQI)Method:60atopic dermatitis patients aged7-23were enrolled and randomly divided into2groups (including Therapy Group and Control Group) for the purpose of analyzing the causes of atopic dermatitis. Therapy Group were used "Modified Ma Chi Xian Decoction" while Control Group taken loratadine orally, and topical therapy of Compound Huangbai solution or She Huang ointment were used in each group. Subjects have been treated for8weeks, followed up for8weeks before being observed on the efficacy which is evaluated by statistical analysis on DLQI and SCORAD before and after treatment.Results:1. Analysis of causes:causes of atopic dermatitis indicated by the survey are listed in descending order:1) time of onset:41(68.3%) cases were strongly associated with particular onset time which most likely to occur in summer.2) Heredity:33(55%) patients have families with atopic diseases;24(40%) patients themselves have allergic rhinitis or asthma (or both);3) food:28(46.7%) patients have conditions incurred or exasperated by certain food which is primarily represented by sea food;4) emotions:19patients (31.7%) have their disease worsened by stress.2. Observation on efficacy:among the56patients who have been through the whole study, efficacy was observed in85.71%of Therapy Group and64.29%of Control Group, and showed significant difference between two groups. During treatment, the SCORAD of the two groups were both downgraded. The comparison between the two groups on SCORAD showed no significant difference on the2and4weeks, but significant difference on8weeks, and Therapy Group is better than Control Group.Comparison on DLQI after8weeks treatment justified significant superiority in Therapy Group. During the8weeks follow up, Therapy Group associated with less relapse rate. No remarkable adverse effects were observed in this study. Conclusion:invigorating spleen and pacifying spirit method has a definitive efficacy on treating atopic dermatitis. The patients were improved in terms of lesion, pruritus and sleeping. This therapy marks improved life quality, reduced recurrence, unnoteworthy adverse effect and better long-term effects than biomedical therapy.
