| Objective Functional constipation in children was a chronic behavioral problem belonging to defecation dysfunction and resulted in seriously harmful effects on growth and development. This study probed into the epidemiologic feature, risk factors, and neuropsychological characteristics in children with functional constipation, and provided the theoretical evidence for clinical diagnosis and psycho-behavior therapy of functional constipationMethods3442children aged4-5years(male1582, female1848), were chosen by stratified random cluster sampling in Qingdao city from July2010to October2010. Their family conditions, growth and development were investigated by questionnaires including self-made general condition and factors influencing constipation questionnaire, Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL), NYLS3~7years old children temperament questionnaire, Family environment Scale-Chinese Version(FES-CV). Epidemiology, related factors and neuropsychological characteristics of children with functional constipation were analyzed. Only22.73%(5/22) of the4~5years old who had functional constipation had ever been taken to see a doctor for this problem.(2) Much more children with functional constipation happened encopresis (X2=58.44P=0.000) than normal children.(3) The scores of schizoid state, social withdrawal, offensive behavior, aggressiveness, restless behavior and total behavioral problem (5.13±1.82,2.13±1.89,7.50±4.76,5.00±2.58,29.63±13.76)were higher than those of control group in female children (3.59±3.02,0.99±1.52,4.94±4.55,2.52±2.62,20.12±16.54)).(4) There was a statistically significant difference in the rhythmicity temperament dimensions between the case group and the controls.(5) Children with functional constipation lived in worse family environment. The scores of successes, entertainment, organization, morality and religion were lower than those of control group.(6) Family structure (X2=9.85P=0.043), sequence of pregnant (X2=26.36P=0.000).education degree of the mother (X2=15.93P=0.003, the conditions of birth (X2=16.25P=0.003), when begin to train child to urine (X2=6.92P=0.140), father encopresis (X2=6.99P=0.008) and dietary preference affected (X2=14.34P=0.014) the occurence of functional constipation. Conclusions The epidemiologic survey demonstrated the actual morbidity rate was more than its visiting rate and many children didn’t visit doctor. Incidence rate of behavior problems in children with functional constipation was much higher, and the disease interfered neuropsychological behavior development. Clinician and parents should pay more attention in prevention and treatment of functional constipation, and provide satisfactory environment for children with functional constipation. |
