The article adopts the research methods of philology, edition study, bibliography and textualism, and takes the two earlier-spread editions of Shanghan Lun-Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-Dynasty-version Shanghan Lun as the study targets. It tracks the two editions’ histories, compares their similarities and dissimilarities in terms of article structure, wording, phrase and sentence, and probes into some clauses in details. The article mainly consists of three parts:In the first part, the article, on the basis of the records of historical catalogues and ancient books, sorts out the circulation history of Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-dynasty-version Shanghan Lun by dividing it into five periods:Eastern Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms, Western/Eastern Jin Dynasty&Northern/Southern Dynasties, Sui Dynasty&Tang Dynasty, and Song Dynasty&afterwards. We come to the conclusion through investigation that such earlier-versions as Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-dynasty-version Shanghan Lun have not been paid adequate attention to and lacking in academic study apparently, compared with the more-popularly-spread Song-Dynasty-version Shanghan Lun.In the second part, the article compares the two versions of Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-dynasty-version Shanghan Lun in respect of chapter arrangement and clause distinctions. The clauses of six-meridian differentiation are the core content of Shanghan Lun. The article discusses them emphatically in six perspectives: totally the same, slightly difference in wording, content similarity, content dissimilarity, clause sectioning and merging, missing parts, and herb combination dissimilarity.Through these comparisons, the article holds that Jingui Yuhanjing was compiled by Southern Dynasties’ physicians, who pieced together and refined the ten volumes of Bian Shanghan, the General Examples of Diagnosis&Treatment, and some other medical theory works during Southern Dynasties, while the Tang-Dynasty-version Shanghan Lun was mainly based on the ten volumes of Bian Shanghan of Southern Dynasties. As the two version’s original script was the same, they share many similarities in clauses. However, as they were compiled independently, they see apparent distinctions. The Tang-Dynasty-version Shanghan Lund did not take Jinggui Yuhanjing as the master copy. The two books came into being in parallel. However, compared with the Song-Dynasty-version Shanghan Lun, they can better reflect the original features of Shanghan Lun. So they boast of significant values in research. In the third part, the article launches emphatic discussions on some controversial clauses of the two versions. The compilation of Clause176in the two versions has seen controversies all the while. The article proposes some new viewpoints:The pulse’s phenomenon of floating and sliding is to complement the earlier pulse phenomenon of being heat both internally and externally. The clause that the prescription of Baitongtang can tackle with the patient who is heat externally and cold internally can well tell the difference from the syndrome of being heat both internally and externally. The Clause141in Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-dynasty-version Shanghan Lun puts it like this:If the patient suffers coldness and excessiveness in the chest without the syndrome of heat, the prescription of Sanwu Xiaobaisun is suitable. Through investigation, the article indicates that Sanwu Xiaobaisun mainly deals with the syndrome of coldness and excessiveness in the chest caused by deficiency-led middle-part coldness. For the clause that the pulse for Taiyang Meridian is weak one day after suffering typhoid, and then becomes large three days later, is of certain significance in linking the context, which can make up for the loss in the Song-version Shanghan Lun. Besides, the article conducts a preliminary survey on some clauses’sectioning and merging. The study of some clauses mentioned above fully underlines the importance of Jingui Yuhanjing and Tang-dynasty-version Shanghan Lun in studying Shanghan Lun.
