In the beginning of 1952, to cultivate more medicine persons with ability and meet people’s need, medicine colleges in China underwent great adjustments. According to the state’s plan, the medicine department of St. John’s University, Zhendan Medicine College and Tongde Medicine College was incorporated into The Second College of Medicine of Shanghai. Against the backdrop of learning from the Soviet Unions, the Second College of Medicine of Shanghai intendedly adopted the Soviet Unions model in transformation of people’s thought, the arrangement of institutions and system of education. However, because of the differences between China and the Soviet Unions’situation and historical background, the Soviet Unions’model did not operate perfectly, and engendered a lot of malpractice. It indicated that one country’s model could not be copied simply by others. Based upon the archives of the President’s Office, the Office of the Dean of Studies, the Personnel Department, etc. of the former Shanghai Second Medical College, which are now preserved in the Medical Faculty Library of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this paper gives an analysis of the basic ways that China had brought in the Soviet Model of Higher Medical Education, and makes an inquiry into the functioning mechanism of the model after its entering the medical educational institutions of China. The conclusion reached in this research is that it was a wide range of factors, not single one, which had brought about the model’s being unfit for China’s Higher Medical Education, and that for its unfitness and finally its being abandoned by Chinese any simplified or politicized explanation is unsatisfactory.
