Supported by the development of economy and culture, China’s exhibition industry has entered a fast growing phase. Various expositions, exhibitions and museums are constantly renovating their display contents, attracting more and more visitors. However, the temporary exhibitions which last a few or a dozen days require constant redesign and redecoration of the exhibition halls to meet different exhibition themes and aesthetic requirements. As a result, when the exhibition moves out, the exhibition hall will be full of scraps, KT boards, and painting materials, causing an enormous waste and considerable pollution. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore an alternative option which can provide necessary variability to the temporary exhibition halls. Such variability shall deliver to the exhibition halls ability of self-adjustment to meet the constantly changing requirements of exhibitions. It can save resources, and at the same time enriches the display forms, thus further improving visitor’s interactive experience and better severing the purpose of conveying the information. The introduction part of this thesis introduces the background, significance, current status and research methods of this study, and summarizes the structure of this thesis. Following the introduction part, the author of this thesis explains the western and domestic theories and practices regarding the concept of variability. The thesis then discusses the rules and principles governing the application of variability to the design of temporary exhibition halls, and lists the detailed techniques and features in this regard, thus establishing a theoretical foundation for the further study. The last part of this thesis analyzes the techniques of the variable designing through specific cases, and gives a conclusion as well as an expectation concerning the study of the variable designing in temporary exhibition space.
