Hantao design was originated from the protection and collection of the books. It has become anessential part of the book binding and design with the effort of the numerous effort of book collectors. Theartistic cultivations and aesthetic styles of these bibliophiles have shown a direct impact on Hantao designstreams. In the case study of the book collection in Ming Dynasty, the book collectors’ different tastes werecompared from multi perspectives. The history of the the book binding and design was traced back toelucidate the interaction between the certain culture and Hantao design. As a result, the cultural and artisticvalue of Hantao design in Ming Dynasty was generated from this research. Furthermore, the attitudes of thescholars is the key influential factor over the book binding and design development. This research maycontribute to the modern design from an ancient culture angle. I also wish that the book designers mightdraw a sort of inspiration from this as well as others who are interested on book binding and design.
