This paper aims to examine the wording, differences and reasons for differences of authors’ brief introduction in Mainland China, Taiwan and America and Great Britain, to summarize the items involved, to discuss the discourse structure and to put forward suggestions of how to write brief introductions through a comprehensive analysis. There are450pieces of brief introduction from three sampling places, many of which are substantially the same, such as their set items, but in some aspects, they make great differences. The respective emerging rate of authors’ other works is1.52in mainland China,0.69in Taiwan and0.65in America and Great Britain. The respective emerging rate of the award winners is1.30in Mainland China,0.08in Taiwan and0.30in America and Great Britain. The respective mention rate of their graduation institutions is82.82%in Taiwan,66.67%in Mainland China and22.90%in America and Great Britain.77.09%in Taiwan,63.22%in Mainland China and71.50%in America and Great Britain make reference to their titles. In terms of titles and academic positions, the emerging rate is52.34%in America and Great Britain, which is the highest, while the respective rate is37.93%in Mainland China and33.92%in Taiwan. The higher rate means the increasing attention. In this way, mainland China pays more attention to the authors’works and awards. Taiwan attaches more importance to the authors’ graduation institutions and educational backgrounds. America and Great Britain focus on the authors’titles and academic positions. Researchers in America and Great Britain intend to employ the cooperative methodology more often than Taiwan and Mainland China, mainland China at least. Authors in Mainland China and Taiwan prefer to show photos, but authors in Mainland China make less reference to their families, for they do not care about family as they say. Mainland China authors prefer approximations to accurate numbers, which explains that the expression is more ambiguous than that in Taiwan, America and Great Britain.Parts of authors in mainland China are authority-worship-oriented, such as their mention about the transmitting and publishing by the Ren Min university press. Mostly the introduction in mainland China is more stylized than Taiwan and America and Great Britain.(In contrast, being unique means employing new formats or novel language). The stylized introduction in Taiwan accounts for70%or more, while the introduction in America and Great Britain is mainly about numbers of words and items.Suggestions:It is necessary for authors to mention their contact in the introduction to communicate with readers and increase the allocation rate of authors’brief introduction in books. Which items should be in the introduction depends on book categories. Academic and professional books should focus on the introduction of authors’ academic study, research interests or academic points of view, research methods and recent studies, while non-academic and non-professional books should be in accordance with the actual situation of authors. |
