Hollow brick was first discovered used as a kind of ceramic building materials in the above-ground structures from Pre-Zhou Dynasty or early period of the West Zhou Dynasty to the underground grave, which peaked in the middle period of West Han Dynasty. The prevailing of hollow brick increased the amount of its use in underground, while its use was ignored on the above-ground for its little discovery. The continuity is apparent for the pattern and shape of hollow brick from Warring States Period to early Han Period, from which time the hollow brick of above-ground and underground are both the research objective. To detail the information, the research narrates the discovery of hollow brick of above-ground and underground from Warring States Period to early Han Period based on the existing collection of archaeological data and images. The type of research is divided into vignette and portrait by means of brick surface design according to the related knowledge and method of Archaeological Typology and the Pattern Study. The subdivision of vignette is according to the compound mode while the portrait is according to the theme and content. The research is to prove that the design and content of hollow bricks are different according to the territory of use, level of crowd and difference of times through the study of classify, partition and the prevailing times of brick surface design.Research will combine the traditional brick technique and studies of predecessors to summarize related questions on the manufacture method. Function of hollow brick is not limited to the stepping or bedding steps for the discovery of new materials. While the extending rang of application of hollow brick from overground to underground, has interwovenness with the influence of material factors and change of social structure, such as pottery-making technique, tool and productive capacity of the time.
