| From the global perspective, this article, aiming at analysizing the pursuit of Confucius, focuses on the uniqueness of Confucius’s personality. The article examines several factors of the sources about Confucius’s personality, including relatives, Duke Chou, teachers, students, monarchs and social phenomena, etc. The article also lists and analyzes four main spiritual outlooks, for instance, Confucius strives constantly for self-improvement; he values justice above material gains; he is cousumed with social care; he can ease himself properly. Through emphasizing the unique position of Rite and Benevolence, the paper argues that Rite is the means against power and violence, but it meanwhile retards Confucius himself. Also, Rite plays the role of linking up heaven and earth, the ancient and the modern. Benevolence is the ideal personality of the pursuit of Confucius and the manifestation of creative personality, which is also the base of Confucian orthodoxy. Confucius’s inner conflict caused by "He still insists on striving forward, though he is entirely aware that he cannot succeed ultimately" is settled by doing in accordance with Rite and Benevolence as well. |
