In the background of the globalization of world economy and the rise of China, translation is playing an increasingly important role in the communication betweencountries in the economic, political and cultural activities, which results in the rapiddevelopment and growth of translation industry. At the same time, science andtechnology keep progressing; scientific and technological innovations, especiallyadvanced information and computer technology, bring about changes to the ways oftranslation. Mastering translating technology (TT) has become an essential skill formodern translation industry practitioners. In contemporary translation industry, withthe help of translating technology, translation is no longer an isolated and closedprocess, but an open and ordered process involving the interaction of translatingagencies, translators and clients. In this thesis, the author introduces the theory and principles of projectmanagement (PM) and the development of translation mode at the beginning.Developing from the cooperation of an interpreter and a scribe to the cooperation ofa translator and a reviser and to modern cooperative translation with labor divisionand multiple procedures, collaborative translation nowadays has become acomplicated process involving manual labor, material resource, financial capabilityand technology. On the basis of PM theory, the author views the modern translationmode in translating agencies as a kind of project management activity—translationmanagement. Translating technology, being a part of modern information technology, has penetrated into every procedure of translation management and affects thecompletion of the translation. In the thesis, the author introduces several kinds offrequently-applied TT and the application in translation management. In order to obtain the first-hand material and to learn about the actual translationmanagement and the application of TT in translating agencies, the author conducts afield study in a famous local translating agency and makes close investigations as well as interviews. With the help of the information gathered from documents andinvestigations, the author designs a questionnaire and carries out a survey to graspthe translation market situation and intuitive experiences of the frontline translators. The author applies statistic analysis to discuss the significance of theapplication of TT in translation management and finally comes to the followingfindings:1) TT can improve translation quality: translation memory(TM),terminology database and the Quality Assurance(QA) tools ensure higher quality oftranslation;2) TT can shorten the time acquired for translation works sincetranslating technology, especially TM, sets translators free from repetitive work;3)TT can decrease the cost of translation: paperless office becomes a reality and thesame amount of work requires less labor than before;4) TT optimizes the translationprocess, making documentation and collaboration in translation much easier thanbefore. The author hopes that the findings of this study will bring about the followingeffects:1) to inspire translating technology, clients and translation teaching;2) toplay a positive role in promoting the researches on translation theory;3)to promotetranslation workflow optimization and the development of translation industry.
