In the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language(TCFL) and its research,Chinese characters have been a headache to students and teachers for a long while, as wellas a disagreements among the researchers. Recently, a series of achievements have beenachieved in the methods of the teaching foreigners Chinese characters and the ontology ofChinese characters. But most of them are about the theory and experience in Chinesecharacters teaching, or error analysis based on the foreign students’ characteristics ofacquisition. They have limited guidance, for the foreign students, to improve the interest,methods and effect in learning Chinese characters. As for teachers, they haven’t played aeffective role in solving the practical problems encountered in the teaching process. So, Istudy the outstanding achievements of Open Literacy in domestic primary school Chineseand employ them in order to explore how to solve the problems in TCFL, to improveliteracy teaching methods, to optimize the teaching links of TCFL. Moreover, I attempt todiscover how to pilot students to learn Chinese characters through various channelsautonomously and cultivate them interest in it.This article adopts several methods of study, including document research,questionnaire method, action research and experience sum-up method. Among them, actionresearch is the most important one. It is based on the practical problems encountered in theclass, so it owns the actual effect and maneuverability. In the field of TCFL, actionresearch hasn’t been widely implemented. This article selects the practical problems in theclass of Chinese characters teaching, and carries out the Open Literacy action research.After defining the criterion of the content, space and methods of Open Literacy, I conceivethe solutions of the problems in teaching and learning Chinese characters. During theprocess, I collect the research materials through classroom observations. Then, based thestudent interview and teacher’s self-evaluation, I reflect on the Open Literacy to sum upthe experience and find out new problems.There four chapters in this article: Chapter1is the introduction, which introduces theraising, importance and methods of the research. It mainly describes the research situationof teaching foreigners Chinese characters, Open Literacy in domestic primary schoolChinese and action research, propose to launch Open Literacy action research in primary TCFL; Chapter2is the presentation of documentation, which elaborates the researchbackground and in procedure. It analyzes the problems in learning and teaching Chinesecharacters to design and implement the Open Literacy; Chapter3is the reflection, which isbased on the students interview and teacher’s self-evaluation to illustrate the advantagesand disadvantages of Open Literacy. Then, it searches the new problems on the basis of thereflection; Chapter4concludes this article.
