This dissertation has four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, this is a brief survey of the previous study of all Chinese locatives and locatives "li" and "wai". Some preliminary issues, for example, the goal, methodology, framework and creative points as well as the data of the theses are also discussed in it. The theoretical basis is cognitivism. Constrastive analysis, error analysis, statistics and classification methods, etc have been adopted. Chapter two, a cognitive analysis on locatives "li" and "wai". In this part, illustrations and summaries have been shown from four aspects:space, time, amount and metaphorical meanings. Locative " li" is used more frequently than "wai" due to their different degrees of grammaticalization. Chapter three, from the contrast between English and Chinese languages and error types the overseas students made during their study on Chinese locatives "li" and "wai", on the basis of the HSK Outline and Chinese Level and Boya Chinese, a detailed analysis on the teaching request of "li" and "wai" has been carried on. Afterwards, error analysis of locatives "li" and "wai" used by foreign students has been followed. Chapter four, teaching strategies of Chinese locatives "li" and "wai" have been offered for elementary, intermediate and advanced learners according to their different language levels.During the researching and writing process, I have referenced lots of books and theses about Chinese locatives and errors in use. After a detailed analysis on locatives used by overseas students, some teaching strategies and methods have been summarized and prompted in the expectation that they will do favor to teaching Chinese as a second language.
