Chuang-tzu is not only a philosophical masterpiece but also a literary classic. However, in the ancient China because of Confucianism, it’s too late for people to discover the beauty of Chuang-tzu’s structure and art.Since the Song Dynasty, there have been comments about the composition structure and writing skills on Chuang-tzu. During the Qing Dynasty, the academic atmosphere was so strong that many scholars buried themselves in the comments on Chuang-tzu. The Snow Heart Series of Chuang-tzu written by Liu Fengbao is an outstanding masterpiece.The first section of the first chapter outlines the prose criticisms on Chuang-tzu before the Qing Dynasty. Lin Xiyi, Liu Chenweng, Lu Xixing and others started to comment on Chuang-tzu in an aesthetic way and from the angle of art, sometimes they used the poetry words.Their efforts opened up the vision and broadened the field of Chuang-tzu studies for the future generations.The second section summarizes the prose criticisms on Chuang-tzu in the Qing Dynasty.Before the Qing Dynasty,the comments on the grammar of Chuang-tzu were sporadic and scattered.Hu Wenying changed it. He also found Chuang-tzu’s infinite sincerity and deep love as well. Lin Yunming’s art criticisms on Chuang-tzu are very detailed. What’s more,because of his literary accomplishment and extraordinary aesthetic taste,he also did a lot of appreciations on the style and charm of Chuang-tzu. Xuan Ying set up a milestone in the study of Chuang-tzu.On the one hand, he interpreted the profound philosophic theory of Chuang-tzu.On the other hand,he analysed its changeable grammar. His systemic,comprehensive and unique researches on the text structure and artistic style of Chuang-tzu directly nourished and deeply inspired Liu Fengbao.The second chapter elaborates the comment system and features of The Snow Heart Series of Chuang-tzu from five aspects:the style, the grammar, the vigour and the feelings. The writing style of Chuang-tzu has five forms:magnificent, graceful, humorous,sharp and cold. The grammar of Chuang-tzu is both interlaced and rigorous.In his opinion,the four steps in the composition of Chuang-tzu—opening, developing, changing and concluding are both loose and tight. Sometimes they are like vast seas,sometimes they are like little brooks,which are so exciting and give the readers endless aftertastes. Chuang-tzu is very rich in the inner feelings. They are implicit,elegant,unrestrained and grieved. The third chapter points out two shortcomings about The Snow Heart Series of Chuang-tzu.One is that Liu Fengbao’s annotations on Chuang-tzu are in view of Confucianism. Another is that he affirmed that the author of Chuang-tzu·Under Heaven is Chuang-tzu.
