Common words are important part of the entire Chinese lexicon, the evolutionof which affects the main artery of the historical Chinese lexicology.In the study ofvast Chinese Lexical History, common words can be fully understand only byobtaining their beginnings and know how they are change.This paper takes the verb vocabulary system of Chinese “cry” as the researchobject, the built corpus as the foundation, discriping their form and meanings invarious historical periods, the system properties and their evolution with the methodof synchronic and diachronic. Meanwhile, this paper is to compare the similarities anddifferences of the various members, exploring the differences of each member andevolution reasons combined with the semantics and cognitive linguistics research.The paper is made of six chapters. Chapter One claims the reason why choosethis topics, discussing the study of the status and background of "common words",giving the built Corpus and clarifing the research methods and objectives, that is,synchronic discription of the verb “cry” from ancient to modern period and diachronicstudy. Chapters2to5analysises the frequency of the verb cry’s use in the ancient,medieval, modern, modern dynasties. The final chapter is conclusion, summarizingthe historical evolution and characteristics of the verb "cry" to further explore theevolution rules of this word.
