| The thesis intends to explore the traveling of Hanshan’s poems from the perspective of Edward Said’s traveling theory by comparing two translated versions-Gary Snyder’s "Han Shan, the Cold Mountain Poems" and Arthur Waley’s "27Poems by Han-shan." Inspired by Said’s traveling theory, translation can be taken as a process of textual traveling from one language to another and one culture to another, in which the differences of source texts, target cultures and translators will inevitably affect the outcome of translation. Comparing the differences of the two translations from selected source texts (the traveling preparation), target text production (the traveling process) and reception of target texts (the traveling outcome), the thesis also digs into the reasons for such differences, and analyzes the different influence the two translations impose on American and British societies and cultures. |
