Oil Painting And Reality----An Exploration Study And Analysis Of Wenliang Yan’s Painting Style

According to development and changing of Wenliang Yan’s painting style from1909to1986, the thesis, dividing his artistic practice into three periods, namely "perspective and composition","color and painting from real life" and "imago and poetic", fully discourses his style and characteristics of every period from shapes, causes of formation and historical background. During the period of perspective and composition (1909-1928), his painting style was based on principles of perspective of Italy Renaissance, applying western paintings’composition characteristics and combining sunlight and shadow, light and shade. According to the scenes of China’s real life of that time, he produced works like Kitchen, The butcher’s and so on. During the period of color and painting from real life(1928-1966), he acquired the impressionism’s knowledge of color of painting from real life under sunlight, applied the changing of light and color and created works like My7-year-old granddaughter-Qingcheng, Ship factory and so on. During the period of imago and poetic, his painting style was guided by Chinese classic aesthetics ideology and not restricted by principles of painting from real life under sunlight. With a consideration of eastern tastes, he painted works like Ode to our motherland and Mooring again along the Fengqiao. Wenliang Yan, as one of the first generation oil painters in China, has played an important role in the Chinese oil painting development and his achievements both in perspective principle practice and great command of color used in painting under sunlight were quite remarkable. Meanwhile, he was careful, active and passionate in observing and expressing real life, standing for painting from real scenes, which is still quite meaningful to oil painting production of the present.
